Why I Joined the Board of the Boys and Girls Club

Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents who created a safe and supportive environment for me. That stability gave me the freedom to explore, take risks, and pursue my passions, knowing I always had a safe place to return to. As an adult, I’ve come to realize what an advantage that was—and how not every child has the same opportunity.

My journey with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston began several years ago when Gerald Bodzy, a longtime board member, invited me to their annual gala. From that first introduction, I was struck by the organization’s incredible work—the programs, facilities, and services they provide for kids are truly remarkable. But what impressed me even more was the quality of the children involved and the dedication of the staff. Over time, I had the chance to meet other board members, a group of inspiring individuals united by a powerful mission to empower Houston’s youth.

Laura and I, as non-parents, have challenged each other to find meaningful ways to support the next generation. She’s done so brilliantly, serving on the board of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts, and now I’m honored to take on a similar role with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston. Joining this board feels like a natural step for me—a chance to give back and help support the kind of safe, empowering spaces for kids that I was so lucky to have growing up. I’m excited to contribute to an organization that’s making such a tangible difference in our community.
